Itinerary

Day 1 – Begin Your Journey in Budapest

As you travel into Budapest, you catch sight of yellow trams humming along the city’s broad boulevards, passing carved façades and historic coffeehouses lit behind tall windows. Perhaps you’ll pass tiled bathhouses heated by thermal springs, where mosaics gleam through the steam above open-air pools. At a local restaurant, you’ll join your Travel Director and fellow travellers over dinner, tasting Hungarian cooking as you exchange names and meet your fellow travellers.

Day 2 – Budapest’s Cultural Highlights and River Views

At the *Liszt Academy of Music, you’ll settle beneath the gilded balconies of the Art Nouveau Grand Hall as the first notes travel from the stage, clear enough to catch every pause and change in tempo. With your Local Specialist, you’ll walk through Buda’s Old Town and look up at the patterned Zsolnay tiles of Matthias Church before crossing the stone terraces of Fisherman’s Bastion. Between its seven towers, you’ll follow the Danube across the city to Parliament on the opposite bank. In the evening, perhaps choose an Optional Experience and take to the river, tasting Hungarian specialities as the lights of Budapest’s bridges tremble in long ribbons across the dark water. *On some occasions, the Liszt Academy visit will be replaced by an organ recital at Matthias Church.

Day 3 – Journey Through Slovakia to Kraków

You’ll leave Budapest behind and follow the road into Slovakia, watching long valleys narrow and weave between the forested slopes of the Low Tatras. At Donovaly, where the mountains meet Veľká Fatra, you pause among open meadows and breathe in the resinous scent of spruce and fir. Further north, you’ll pass villages of traditional wooden houses before lifting your gaze to Orava Castle, its stone walls and steep roofs rising tier by tier from the rock above the river. You’ll cross into Poland and continue towards Kraków as the Carpathian hills slowly recede behind you.

Day 4 – Discover Kraków’s Heritage and Memorials

Climbing Wawel Hill with your Local Specialist, you’ll enter the cool hush of Wawel Cathedral, where candlelight catches on gilded chapels and the faint scent of wax hangs beneath the high vaults. Back outside, you’ll follow Kraków’s worn cobbles past the former residence of Pope John Paul II and into the vast Market Square, where the arcades of the Sukiennice Cloth Hall run beneath carved façades. Inside St Mary’s Basilica, you look up at the deep blue vaults and the richly carved altar before stepping back into the square. Then the hejnał sounds from the tower, its lone trumpet call floating above the rooftops before stopping abruptly on the final note. Later, at Oświęcim, you’ll visit Auschwitz with a Local Specialist. Among the preserved remains and memorials, you pause to reflect on those who suffered and died here.

Day 5 – Kraków to Warsaw Across Poland

On today’s Optional Experience, you’ll descend 380 steps into Wieliczka, the timbered stairway winding deeper as silver-grey salt ripples through the walls like frozen silk. Beside a dark saline lake, you pause before entering St Kinga’s Chapel, where chandeliers of salt crystal spill pearly light over an altar and reliefs carved by generations of miners. Alternatively, you can enjoy time at leisure before travelling across Poland’s open plains to Warsaw.

Day 6 – Royal Warsaw and the Chopin Memorial

Guided by your Local Specialist, you’ll cross Warsaw’s meticulously rebuilt Old Town, moving between painted townhouses and the warm red walls of the Royal Castle before looking up at the Palace of Culture’s pale stone tower. In Łazienki Park, you’ll follow garden paths to the Chopin Memorial, where the composer sits beneath a bronze willow, its branches swept sideways as though caught in the wind. At the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes, you pause and pay your respects to those who fought and died in the Warsaw Ghetto. The afternoon is yours. Perhaps continue exploring Warsaw’s past at your own pace, or take your seat for a Chopin recital, as you listen to the piano sweeping from tender, measured notes into full passages.

Day 7 – Cross the Oder into Berlin

West of Warsaw, you’ll watch the central plains stretch towards the horizon, the road dipping through farmland until the Oder River gleams below and you cross into Germany. As you enter Berlin, ochre-red S-Bahn trains thread between apartment blocks while you travel deeper into the capital. Perhaps begin your stay in Berlin with traditional local cooking, tasting crisp currywurst covered in a rich tomato-curry sauce.

Day 8 – Berlin’s Highlights: Reichstag to Museum Island

With your Local Specialist beside you, you’ll travel beneath the spreading branches of the Tiergarten, their leaves rustling above the avenue as the Reichstag’s glass dome catches the shifting sky. At Brandenburg Gate, you stand between tall sandstone columns with the bronze Quadriga crowning the gate above, then follow Unter den Linden into former East Berlin. The broad avenue carries you past the State Opera towards Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where domes and colonnades line the Spree. You’ll move along the stone embankment beside the curve of the river, past carved balustrades and arched bridges.

Day 9 – Dresden to Prague Across the Ore Mountains

Travelling south to Dresden, you’ll stand before the Frauenkirche, where dark stones rescued from the ruins remain set among pale sandstone, the scars of 1945 still visible in its rebuilt walls. Along the Royal Palace, trace the Procession of Princes across more than 100 metres of Meissen porcelain, following horsemen, flowing robes and raised banners from tile to tile. Beyond the Catholic cathedral, tiered curves and the Zwinger’s Baroque court rise around Theatre Square and sculpted nymphs lean above fountains as you make your way across. After free time for lunch, you’ll cross the Ore Mountains and continue through the Czech Republic towards Prague. In Malá Strana, move between venues for a Dine-Around dinner, tasting each course at a different table. Then, you’ll wander streets marked by carved emblems above centuries-old doorways before finishing on Charles Bridge, where rows of gas lamps line the bridge and the Vltava slips beneath the arches.

Day 10 – St Vitus Cathedral and Historic Prague

Across Prague Castle’s courtyards, your Local Specialist guides you towards the dark Gothic spires of St Vitus Cathedral. Inside, your gaze travels from stained-glass saints in ruby, sapphire and gold to the ribbed vaults high above, in the same church where Czech kings and queens were once crowned. With the city yours to explore, perhaps retrace the Royal Route once used by Bohemian monarchs, following their coronation path through Prague’s historic centre. Later, perhaps order a local pilsner with hearty Czech cooking, letting the beer’s cold, clean bitterness cut through the richness on your plate.

Day 11 – Wander Český Krumlov’s Castle and Lanes

Following the Vltava into Český Krumlov, you watch red roofs rise above the river and climb towards the castle. In the castle courtyards, you’ll pass walls covered with gods and heroes beside trompe-l’œil windows painted directly onto the plaster, then watch the layered arches of the Cloak Bridge stretch across the ravine. Once the day visitors have gone, you’ll return through narrow lanes, listening to the river running below the houses. At a local restaurant, you savour a traditional Czech dinner as the streets outside grow quiet.

Day 12 – Austria’s Capital: Spittelberg and Beyond

Crossing into Austria, you’ll follow the road towards Vienna as rows of vines stripe the hills at the city’s edge. With the afternoon yours, you might wander through Spittelberg, where Biedermeier houses stand shoulder to shoulder and ivy trails from old pergolas behind arched entrances. Later, perhaps choose today’s Optional Experience and travel beyond Vienna for dinner at a country mansion, tasting Austrian cooking around the table with your fellow travellers.

Day 13 – Discover Schönbrunn and Vienna’s Grand Boulevards

At Schönbrunn Palace, you’ll follow your Local Specialist through Maria Theresa’s state rooms, where crystal mirrors catch white-and-gold rococo ornament from every angle. Outside, you’ll move along the Great Parterre, its dark boxwood and coloured gravel arranged in patterns once compared to embroidery. Along the Ringstrasse, you’ll pass the Opera House, Hofburg Imperial Residence and Austrian Parliament Building before reaching Karlskirche, where marble columns stand beneath its great green dome. For your choice experience, you can take a marble-topped table in a traditional Viennese cafe. The roasted scent of coffee rises as you press your fork through the fine chocolate coating of Sachertorte. Alternatively, join a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience and count one-two-three as you turn across the floor in an inclusive Viennese waltz workshop designed to support the visually impaired community. Later, you share traditional Austrian fare and drinks at a local restaurant before sitting down to a concert, watching bows sweep across the strings as Viennese melodies ripple through the hall.

Day 14 – Budapest Farewells and Journey Home

Today, you say farewell to the friends you’ve made before your transfer to the airport. Your complementary coach transfer will first drop guests at Vienna Airport before continuing to Budapest for your final drop-off.
